Tyroo

Filed under: startups — guneetsahai @ 9:13 pm

Tyroo (http://www.tyroo.com) is an internet advertising network based out of New Delhi. Commercially launched in June 2006, it is incubated by the Smile Interactive Technology Group (SITG) – which also has some other successful companies (Quasar Media, Creons, Zoomtra, Zumtra & StudioSmile) also under its hood.

With 1000+ publishers (web-sites) already using their services Tyroo seems to be doing a great job. One reason for this could be innovative services that Tyroo is bringing in to the on-line advertising space. For example – they recently started an SMS initiative that would allow a consumer to send an SMS online to the ad publisher. This would be of immense benefit to Indian SMEs who do not have web-sites yet.

The core technology platform on which the product is based has been developed in-house which provides Tyroo an edge over competition in India. Both Java & .NET technologies are being used in building the platform.

Got my blog on a dedicated domain (www.indianstartups.info) from http://guneetsahai.blogspot.com

It took 15 minutes to get the new domain registered & within the next 5 minutes it was already pointing to my blog. Moreover the over-all expenditure on this exercise was as little as $2.

Thanks Blogger

Wirkle is working in building a social networking tool for the mobile phone user community. The company has been around since more than two years & has Varun Khurana (IIT Delhi), Sunil Goyal (IIT Delhi) & Lomesh Dutta (Delhi College of Engineering) as the principal founding members. Headquartered in Santa Clara, CA, Wirkle has a small (around 20 at the time of writing this) but smart team of engineers right here in Gurgaon.

LinkNSurf (http://www.linknsurf.com) is Wirkle’s flagship product. Currently in beta, it allows the user to share & track blogs, photos & other useful content right on the mobile phone. The idea here is very simple – Wirkle’s server gets content (blogs, photos, emails etc) from sources on the web through a variety of protocols & then transform this information into a format that is suitable for viewing on the mobile phone. The application is ready to be tried on a variety of phones. You can find out more about this service on the FAQ page of the service.

Besides LinkNSurf, Wirkle also offers software development services to its clients. Having used J2EE as the platform for LinkNSurf, their areas of strength in technology include Client/Server core java development & J2ME. More elaborate list of Technologies that Wirkle’s team has experience on can be found here.

About Me

Filed under: About — guneetsahai @ 10:53 am

My Name is Guneet Sahai & I’m a Freelance Software Developer based out of Gurgaon (India), working towards my goals. An engineering graduate from IIT Roorke – class of 1999, I’m also a co-founder for chahiye.info which is a portal that intends to offer bouquet of services.

am just another Techie from IIT [Roorkee], who has enjoyed working at Startups since 1999 & is now addicted to them.

I’m passionate about developing software. My experience has been mostly in developing back-end pieces that are often not visible. I get my kicks out of writing thread safe code that performs well at high loads. I have always been working at small startups throughout my career and I love that so much that I don’t think I will be able to work in a larger established co. now

I’m a happily married man, father to two children settled along with my parents in Gurgaon, India. Born in New Delhi (India) I have spent most of my 31 years of life in New Delhi. I have been living in Gurgaon since last three years and plan to settle down here now.

Tracking Tech Startups

Filed under: startups — guneetsahai @ 6:52 pm

Sometime ago, I started making a note of every product startup company I heard about in the NCR region. I wanted to know more about what these companies are doing & how are they going about it. I enjoyed this so much that I added some notes about these organizations in a spread-sheet document. Later I realized, that this was very useful information for anyone & which is not readily available on the web. So I decided to put this on my blog for the benefits of all others. In fact this was also one of the reasons at the back of my mind – for starting this Blog.

If you are wondering why I was collecting this information; here’s the answer. Every couple of months I used to get into this mode of “I want to start my own venture”. Unfortunately I don’t think I’m ready yet to start on my own – but I’m very keen on learning from what other startups have been doing. The idea there (perhaps) is to learn from these companies and hopefully apply this knowledge in future to other startup that I get associated with. Another reason why I started looking into this data was that one a friend commented that startups don’t work well in Delhi/NCR. I disagreed as I didn’t see (and still don’t see) any logic behind this. To prove my point, I started collecting this information.

I will be posting information about some of these product based startups in NCR in my next set of posts. The information that I’ll post is gathered from various public channels (blogs, web-sites etc) but might be stale. I would encourage [ex-]employees from these companies (if they come across this blog) to point out mistakes & improve the content in any way they can think would be more beneficial to readers.

What do I want

Filed under: thoughts — guneetsahai @ 6:12 pm

Recently my employer organized a 2 day work-shop on good interviewing skills. Initially I was very reluctant to go as I didn’t think I would gain much out of it. However I was pleasantly surprised & found the work-shop very interesting & useful right from the beginning. It opened my mind to the possibility of measuring things in an interviewee that I thought were not measurable. It also made me think on some bigger issues with respect to my own professional life that I had been ignoring. In one of the sessions the topic being discussed was “To find if the candidate’s long time goal & the company’s vision fit”. While this topic was being discussed – my mind came out with a very elementary question – What is my long time goal?

This question looks amazingly simple but it troubled me a lot that I didn’t have an equally simple answer to it. I started in search for an easy answer to this question by analyzing things that I enjoy and/or want out of my career. The portion below in this post describes these things & in the end arrives at a simple answer to this question.

a) Money – I certainly need money. It is a very important element that in the past has been the deciding factor on taking or leave a job offer. Could making money be my goal? The statement stresses on making money – I have to earn that money. Getting rich without earning it might not be enough to make me happy. So I started shamelessly with “My Goal is to make money” – Some more thinking & I realized that though this goal statement is correct, but it is not complete – there has to be something more to it.

b) Developing Software – I am a software engineer and I enjoy my work. I enjoy building software that simplifies people’s lives. I enjoy improving/enhancing its capabilities. I enjoy taking it to the next level & raising the bar for the competition. With these thoughts I refined my goal statement to – “My goal is to make money by developing software”. However this was also not it. There was still something missing.

c) Software Product – Since so far I have been working at Products Based organizations & have been enjoying it, I can call my self a products person. Though I have nothing against Services but its just that I think would enjoy products more. With this thought – I can further refine my goal statement to – “My goal is to make money by developing software products”.

d) My product – It is extremely important for me to feel the software product is my product. IMO without this association it would feel like working on somebody else’s product – which would kill the fun in being a product’s organization. With this thought I can refine my statement further “My goal is to make money by developing my software product

e) World Class – The product has to be the best in its class. Technology wise the product should be clear winner or it should be attempting through innovation something that hasn’t been attempted yet. This adds another word in my goal statement, which now becomes – “My goal is to make money by developing my world-class innovative software product”.

f) More than Engineering – Getting a thumbs-up for your product from an end-user is perhaps the most satisfying experience one can get. However to have a good satisfied customer you need to give your customer a good experience at all the touch-points. This requires a lot more work than just developing a good product. Fortunately, since I have been working in small start-ups I have had the experience to notice (and sometimes work in) these different areas: presales, tech support, documentation that go along with engineering to improve a customer’s experience. To summarize, I would eventually want to handle more than just engineering. So this refines my goal to

“My goal is to make money by developing & selling my world-class innovative software product

After having arrived at a short and simple answer to the simple question – I wondered was it worth the effort. Yes I think it was – Now I have parameters to measure my happiness at work. Also since I know exactly what would make me happy; I can ask for these other things (besides money) from my manager during my performance review :-)
